High Paying Trades and AI Side Hustles You Can Learn Fast

If your paycheck is not stretching like it used to, you are not alone. The good news is you do not need a four year degree or a pile of student loans to make more money. You need a skill people will pay for.

This guide covers two paths. First, AI skills you can learn from your kitchen table in a few weeks and start charging for on the side. Second, skilled trades that pay well above what the typical American worker makes, many of them with training that pays you while you learn.

Here is a number to keep in mind as you read: the typical American worker earned $50,980 a year in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Every trade on this list beats that or comes close.

Side hustle

Part 1: AI Skills You Can Learn Fast

Businesses want help with AI, and most of them have no idea where to start. That gap is your opportunity. On Upwork, one of the biggest freelance job sites, demand for AI related skills more than doubled in a single year.

You do not need to be a computer genius. Most of these skills come down to learning one or two tools well and showing a business owner how it saves them time or money.

1. AI Video Creation

What it is: Using AI video tools to make short ads, product videos, and social media clips.

Why it pays: This was the fastest growing AI skill on Upwork, with spending up 329% in one year. Businesses especially want "AI UGC," which means videos that look like a real customer talking about a product.

Who hires you: Local restaurants, real estate agents, small shops, and online sellers who need video but cannot afford a film crew.

How to start: Pick one AI video tool, learn it, and make three sample videos for real local businesses. Those samples become your portfolio.

2. AI Automation for Small Businesses

What it is: Setting up tools like Zapier, Make, or n8n so a business runs on autopilot. Think automatic replies to new leads, appointment booking, follow up texts, and invoice reminders.

Why it pays: AI integration work grew 178% on Upwork last year. Upwork says specialized AI work often reaches $75 to $150 an hour or more. Beginners start lower, but this is one of the best paying skills on the list once you have a few wins.

Who hires you: Plumbers, dentists, law offices, cleaning companies. Any business that misses calls or loses track of customers.

How to start: Learn one automation tool through its free tutorials. Then offer to fix one annoying problem for a business you already know.

3. AI Chatbot Setup

What it is: Building a chatbot that answers customer questions on a business website, day and night.

Why it pays: Demand for chatbot work rose 71% on Upwork. A business owner who is tired of answering the same five questions every day will pay to make that stop.

How to start: Most website builders and chatbot tools have simple setup options. Build one for a friend's business first so you can show it off.

4. Data Labeling

What it is: Helping train AI by tagging photos, checking answers, and sorting information.

Why it pays: Demand grew 154% on Upwork. The pay is lower than the other skills here, but it is one of the easiest ways to get started. Hours are flexible and you can do it from your couch.

Good for: Parents, retirees, and anyone who wants extra money on their own schedule.

5. AI Content and Social Media Help

What it is: Using AI to help write posts, emails, and blogs for small businesses, then managing their social media pages.

Why it pays: Local businesses know they need to post online. Most do not have time. If you can keep their page active and looking good, you can land monthly retainers.

How to start: Offer one month of posts to a local business at a low price in exchange for a review.

A Quick Reality Check on AI Side Hustles

This is not get rich quick. Upwork says full time skilled freelancers have a median income of about $85,000 a year, which works out to roughly $41 an hour, and you will start below that while you build a portfolio. The people making real money are the ones who solve a specific problem for a specific type of business.

Watch out for scams. If someone wants $2,000 for a course that promises $10,000 a month, walk away. Almost everything you need to learn is free on YouTube and in each tool's own tutorials.

Part 2: High Paying Trades That Do Not Need a College Degree

AI skills are a great side hustle. But if you want a career that cannot be shipped overseas or replaced by a computer, the trades are hard to beat. Somebody still has to fix the air conditioner, wire the house, and keep the lights on.

All pay numbers below are national medians from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025, unless noted. That means half of workers earn more and half earn less. Pay in East Tennessee may run a little lower than the national number, but so does the cost of living.

1. Elevator Installer and Repairer: $109,910 a Year

This is the highest paying trade by median wage, and the top 10% earn more than $158,000. You typically need a high school diploma, then a multi year apprenticeship. Most jobs are union, and spots are competitive, so apply early and apply often. Most states require a license.

2. Lineman (Power Line Installer): $95,320 a Year

Linemen build and repair the power lines that keep everything running. Pay has jumped more than 31% since 2019. Storm work and overtime can push earnings much higher. The work is outdoors, high up, and physically demanding, but the paycheck reflects that.

3. Plumber: $63,800 a Year

Plumbers learn through an apprenticeship, so you get paid while you train. Expect nights, weekends, and emergency calls. Experienced plumbers who start their own shop can earn well beyond the median.

4. Electrician: $63,190 a Year

Electricians are in high demand, with jobs projected to grow 9% over the next ten years, much faster than average. Most learn through a paid apprenticeship and most states require a license. The top 10% make more than $108,000.

5. HVAC Technician: $61,010 a Year

Heating and air techs stay busy year round, especially with Tennessee summers. Training usually starts with a short certificate program. Commercial HVAC work tends to pay more than residential.

6. CDL Truck Driver: $58,640 a Year

This is one of the fastest ways into a solid paycheck. CDL training can take just a few weeks. Over the road driving pays more but keeps you away from home. Local routes pay less but get you home at night.

7. Welder: $53,750 a Year, With Room to Grow Well Past That

The median covers every welder, from entry level shop jobs to seasoned pros, so it undersells what a skilled welder can make. The top 10% earn more than $77,500 a year before overtime. In Alaska and Hawaii, even the typical welder makes around $80,000.

The big money is in specialty work. Pipeline, rig, shutdown, and boilermaker jobs pay a premium, and they often come with heavy overtime and per diem on top of base pay. Boilermakers, who do a lot of welding, average about $80,000 a year. Basic welding training can be finished in months, and certifications are what move you up the pay ladder.

Earn While You Learn

Here is the part many people miss. Electricians, plumbers, linemen, and elevator mechanics usually learn through apprenticeships. That means you get a paycheck from day one instead of paying tuition.

If you live in Tennessee, check out your nearest Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) campus. They offer programs in many of these trades. Adults without a degree should also check whether they qualify for Tennessee Reconnect, which may help cover tuition.

Which Path Is Right for You?

  • Need money fast? Look at CDL training or an AI side hustle like video creation.

  • Want the highest pay ceiling? Elevator mechanic or lineman.

  • Want to work from home? AI automation, chatbots, or social media help.

  • Want a job that will always be needed? HVAC, plumbing, or electrical work.

  • Want both? Learn a trade for your main income and pick up an AI skill on the side.

The Bottom Line

You do not need permission or a fancy degree to earn more. You need a skill and the willingness to start. Pick one thing from this list, give it 30 days, and see where it takes you.

Working people built this country with their hands and their grit. These are just new tools for the same old hustle.
